Guar Gum Powder

Guar gum powder is derived from the ground endosperm of the guar plant. This is a hardy and drought - resistant plant that grows 1-2 meter high with vertical stalks. The seedpods grow in clusters on the vertical stalks. The pods are about 15 cm long and hold six to nine seeds about 2-3 mm in diameter. Roughly, 14-16% of the seed is the hull, 38-45% represents endosperm, and 40-46% germ. This annual plant is an ancient one and is presently grown extensively in India for human and animal consumption. It is also grown in the semi-arid regions. The growing season is about 20-25 weeks. It needs little surface water for growing, and the pods must be harvested in the fall, preferably after the first frost and definitely before the next rain. If not, some of the seeds wither, die, and turn black. If these colored seeds are not removed, the quality of the gum is very poor.

Guar or Cluster Bean, (Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taub) is a cold-water soluble polysaccharide, and has broad uses in and other industries. The uses depend on the properties of very large molecules in various states of hydration, mostly in solution. Guar Gum hydrates very easily to produce aqueous solutions possessing a high viscosity at low gum concentrations. These solutions are good emulsifiers and stabilizers because they prevent oil droplets from coalescing. They may also have property of interfacial binding and thereby act as true emulsifiers.

Guar Gum Powder is also used as a suspension stabilizer as it allows only slow settling because of its thickening power.

Like other legumes, Guar is an excellent soil-building crop with respect to available nitrogen. Root nodules contains nitrogen-fixing bacteria and crop residues, when plowed under improved yields of succeeding crops.
